The Faculty of Life Sciences at University of Baltistan is envisioned as a center of excellence for education, research, innovation, and community engagement in the biological and health sciences. Established in the unique ecological and geographical landscape of Gilgit-Baltistan, the Faculty seeks to harness the immense potential of the region’s rich biodiversity, alpine ecosystems, indigenous livestock resources, medicinal plants, and unique microbial diversity for sustainable development and scientific advancement. Gilgit-Baltistan is recognized as one of the world’s important ecological regions, possessing diverse flora and fauna, high-altitude rangelands, glaciers, freshwater resources, and endemic wildlife species. The region serves as a natural laboratory for scientific exploration in biodiversity conservation, wildlife ecology, climate change, mountain agriculture, livestock management, biotechnology, public health, and environmental sustainability. In response to these opportunities and regional needs, the Faculty of Life Sciences has been established with an interdisciplinary approach to produce skilled professionals, researchers, and innovators capable of addressing emerging biological, environmental, veterinary, and health-related challenges. In its initial phase, the Faculty comprises the Departments of Zoology, Botany, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Veterinary Sciences, and Health Sciences. These departments are strategically designed to promote research and academic excellence in areas such as wildlife conservation, medicinal and alpine plants, microbial diversity, biotechnology applications, livestock and yak management, zoonotic disease surveillance, food security, and public health improvement. The Faculty aims to integrate modern scientific knowledge with indigenous wisdom and local resources to contribute effectively to the socio-economic uplift of Gilgit-Baltistan and beyond. Through quality education, applied research, and collaboration with national and international institutions, the Faculty of Life Sciences aspires to become a leading academic and research hub in mountain biology, biodiversity conservation, veterinary sciences, and health innovation.
